Reality TV for Weddings

wedding showFor all my fellow couch potatoes who love weddings, the new reality show “The Real Wedding Crashers” on NBC seems like it would be fun. Imagine the movie “Wedding Crashers” with Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson crossed with Ashton Kutcher’s “Punk’d”

Unfortunately, the candid camera type jokes at the ceremony and reception, like the priest anwering his cell phone during the vows and having a full on conversation, are said to be played out quickly. I guess there’s only so many irked guests you can laugh at.

If you want to have a joke at your reception, do something funny like putting a person’s nickname in the place card holder.  Or, you could do something random like giving everyone asian wedding favors…even if the rest of your theme has nothing asian in it. I know these aren’t big ideas, but who wants to make their guests spend tons of money to travel to a fake wedding?

Lucky 7’s wedding for sale

If you and your groom or bride are a couple searching for a 07/07/07 wedding date at a great location, there’s one up for grabs in the UK. A lady named Kay Skelton had a great place booked called Taverham Hall, near Norwich. She was going to use it for the ceremony and reception, but unfortunately she and her fiance broke off the engagement last October. She had already spent a hefty 500 pounds on the dream spot, not to mention about a 1000 pounds on her dress, so she’s looking to make back some of her losses. The gown she’s keeping for her real future nuptials.

Sometimes, sad things like this happen, but just like with her dress, there are many wedding items that can be kept for the real future date even if the first one falls through. The bridesmaids dresses, for example, can also be used again. The veil and garter also are reusable, but of course perishable items like the flowers or bridal bouquet are only good for one time, which is why you generally purchase them close to your big day. Wedding favors can also be stored in their boxes until the actual reception, so you don’t have to buy new wedding favors each time. If you buy candle wedding favors, they can keep as well so long as they aren’t used, or are only barely used.

$3,000 dress will be given away!

wedding dressOnly in New York…well, Brooklyn actually. Elisa Zuritsky is a former writer for the hit show “Sex in the City”, and last year she had her dream wedding minus one little important factor - the wedding gown. It’s a $3,000 Mariana Hardwick designed dress, and the story behind it is quite sad. The bride ordered it long before her big day, but the gown did not arrive until 3 days before her nuptials. She had already bought a back-up dress, so the designer one went into her fiance’s closet. She was, of course, very upset so she hasn’t even opened the box since that day.

Now, she’s going to give it away, but there’s one condition…the recipient must win the essay contest Ms. Zuritsky is holding. So, calling all brides-to-be, if you’d like a free and beautiful gown grab your pens. All entries are due by May 31st, 2007 and must be sent to takemydress.com

As long as you’re interested in saving money on your matrimonial plans, you should also look into inexpensive favors and discounted decorations. One type of gift for all your guests that’s affordable are candle favors.

Elizabeth Hurley’s wedding headache

hurley family

The newlywed Elizabeth Hurley has a mess on her hands. She and her husband, Arun Nayar, had a Hindu wedding in a small, conservative town named Jodhpur in western India. Nobody really cared at first, even though Miss Hurley reportedly behaved in a disrespectful manner towards the Hindu traditions during the ceremony. What made it a big deal was that Hello magazine was using the event’s pictures in it’s launch issue for it’s Indian version. This brought to everyone’s attention that the couple had already been married in England with a Christian tradition. Now the small town is very upset and one of it’s citizens is actually prosecuting the couple for mockery of the Hindu faith. Here’s the kicker, one of the prosecuting witnesses is actually Hurley’s new father-in-law. Talk about a family feud.
An Indian based journalist reporting on the incident made a good point: “They were already living together as husband and wife before their Hindu wedding, which seems outrageous to people here. If you don’t care about religious sentiments, why have a religious wedding?” It makes me wonder just how “Christian” their English wedding was, too. If a couple does want to have a faith-based wedding, I think that’s great. My wife and I made sure our nuptials conformed to our faith in Christ, even our unity candle and candle favors, but I don’t think the bride and groom should go through the trouble if it doesn’t mean anything to them or if they don’t want to at least respect the faith’s customs. This goes for all aspects of planning, even the favors. For example, if you decide to get some coaster wedding favors then they should not go against any religious beliefs.

Runaway Bridal Gowns

wedding gownAs of today, a good charity can breath easy. The Making Memories Breast Cancer Foundation had 2,000 wedding dresses worth about $3 million stolen last fall from a hotel parking lot. U.S. border patrol officers recovered the stolen gowns and accessories trying to cross the U.S.-Mexico border.

A truck with the loot was discovered over the weekend trying to cross the border from Mexico into the United States through Nogales.

The dresses are donated by shops and manufacturers. They are then sold at a discount price at bridal shows with profits used to fulfill wishes of terminal cancer patients.

Fran Hansen, co-founder of Making Memories, said she ”felt blessed beyond her wildest dreams” when the call came that the items had been recovered.

If you’re interested in one of these gowns or any other discount wedding favors, the stuff is now headed to Illinois for the charity Chicago Brides Against Breast Cancer gown sale. Perhaps our friend Britney Spears can find some destination favors for wherever she wants to disappear to. On second thought, she should donate some of her and Kevin Federline’s nuptial things. Those could fetch a pretty penny for a good cause.

desperate for wedding cash?

Cold feet didn’t make this bride miss her wedding day. She was hoping to con her family for money! She’s a 24 year old Malaysian that worked as a clerk and teamed up with her fiancé to stage her own kidnapping. I guess the traditional gift cards with cash in them just wouldn’t cut it, so her future husband found some drug traffickers to nab her. She was ransomed for RM 250,000 – or $110,00 USD. The gig was up when cops arrested the kidnappers only to find the groom-to-be in the car with them…not bound and gagged.
It could have been worse for the family, at first the bride-to-be wanted RM 800,000 - $230,000, but that was of course negotiated down. I guess she’d be the type of person interested in cheap wedding favors.  What’s wrong with the world when it’s so important to have money that a woman can become a horrible bridezilla to the point where she endangers her family.  I know the cost of nuptials these days is growing ever higher, but  this is no way to handle it. You can find ways to give your guests fun gifts without spending too much. For example, let the wine wedding favors like bottle openers actually be used at the reception and other parties. That way, you get your money’s worth out of them and your friends still get their presents.

Long Distance Love

With war raging in Iraq, many engaged couples are separated by active duty and so plan their nuptials upon a loved one’s return. Sometimes, however, deployment is extended and many brides and grooms have opted to tie the knot via video conference. What was once reserved for the important business meetings is now available for weddings. Any couple separated by space but joined in love can use this technology for their ceremony, and they can even play it into the reception. For example, travel wedding favors can complement this theme and can make light of a sad situation. Even the bridesmaid’s

gifts and groomsmen wedding gifts can follow the same idea. Now anyone that’s separated by distance can still be united in love. Maybe next they’ll have video conference births for those dads that miss the arrival of their babies into the world. Still, I would rather everyone just come home.

The Daddy Diamond

Many brides sadly don’t get to have their fathers walk them down the aisle, but one bride in the UK decided to find a way around the problem. Celeste Egan’s dad died a year ago from a brain hemorrhage and the family had his body turned into a diamond. She carried the blue diamond down the aisle thus fulfilling the wedding tradition. Talk about a unique wedding favor. It’s amazing what women will do to make their day of holy matrimony absolutely perfect. I guess every marriage deserves to start off with a bang, and what a way to go. Perhaps this will become a sentimental new trend. What personalized wedding favors could go closer to the heart than a loved one who stays with you even when they’re gone.

Encore Brides

There are many husbands out there, myself included, who wouldn’t mind walking down the aisle a second time. No, I’m not talking about divorcing to remarry; I would literally like to redo the whole ceremony. For starters, my hair was looked really bad. I had woman bangs for crying out loud. Grooms, if you’re reading this, do not cut your hair right before the wedding! If you get a bad cut, you want enough time for it to grow out some. Don’t get me wrong, my wedding was great and I will cherish the memories forever, but I’ve learned so much since then that I could really do it right a second time. Apparently, I’m not alone, either. Many married couples out there want to rety the knot and include some new traditions to make even better memories. You can try a different theme ceremony, with new wedding favors for the reception, too. Renewing vows can be fun for the whole family with something like a beach wedding. Island wedding favors can also be a creative memory. Men, you could give your wife a romantic surprise on your anniversary by planning a beautiful vacation for celebrating your union. Tell her you love her so much that you want to marry her all over again.

Finding a Wedding Photographer

Finding the right wedding photographer might be the most important things you do while planning a wedding. Many brides really don’t realize how essential the photographer is. I know this from personal experience. My wedding photographer was recommended by my Aunt as being “fabulous” and the price was right, so that was enough for me.

I didn’t find out until much too late that the person who thought he was “fabulous” was his girlfriend and he had never actually photographed a wedding before! It was a bit of nightmare. When it came time to take pictures, there was NO order. We hadn’t worked out any kind of plan and he had no idea what I wanted. He was a good photographer, but we had a huge lack of communication. Don’t get me wrong I did get some nice pictures, but I would have liked some more spontaneous pictures to choose from. Almost everything I have was staged and if you know me than you know how incredibly spontaneous I am. It wasn’t until we received the proofs that we realized there was one (1) picture of my husband, one (1) of his groomsmen and none of him with my family! So here are the things I suggest you do to stay away from this DISASTER:

1) Use personal referrals. But remember to check out who is doing the referring, so you don’t end us like me.

2) Visit the Website or set up an appointment to look at their portfolio. Concentrate on the pictures not the web design.

3) Conduct a phone interview. The first time I met/talked to my photographer was on my wedding day before the wedding. It was not the best time to synchronize our thoughts.

4) Don’t be afraid to ask questions! You should know everything about the way your photographer is going to record one of the most important days of your life!

5)Get on the same page. Make sure your photographer understands what you want. Let him/her know the wedding theme. Do you want staged shotsor spontaneous ones? Do you want pictures of your wedding cake, Pictures of your guest, or even pictures of your wedding favors?

6) After you’re sold, make a commitment.
